Vanilla is often used as a derogatory term for something being ordinary or plain, which is a bit of a bum rap, and underserved. The right amount of vanilla can add that little bit of pizzazz, even its inclusion in soft drinks is controversial, but for me… quite welcome.
As somewhat of an apologist for the vanilla flavour and the more experimental M&M’s (I’m a big fan of ‘Crispy’, the most derided M&M), it was with great anticipation I tackled the M&M ‘Vanilla Shake’. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but the experience was a monumental let down. The unnecessary inclusion of a blue candy coating to a third of the packet (why blue??) was the first sign of trouble, but the vanilla flavoured chocolate filling was at first unusual and a little off-putting, turning to bland as I continued through the pack, to the point of distastefulness towards the end which almost prevented me from finishing the 200 grams.
A disappointing and unnecessary addition to the M&M family, best avoided.
