If Woolworths made it an annual release, I'd be very much there for it every January.
We’re not much for traditions in my household. But one that I hold dear is that glorious time in the days following Christmas every year in which people complain about how quickly hot cross buns have arrived on the shelf, well-ahead of Easter. As soon as I see those first complaints, I pop down to the shops and buy myself a 6-pack of buns (posting with delight about my purchase on social media).
The thing to understand about hot cross buns is:
A) They’re delicious
B) See point A
So, when Woolworths started selling their own Woolworths-branded limited edition Hot Cross Buns variety of ice-cream, they had my attention. For pure muckraking on Twitter, I was excited about taking some pictures of me shoveling it into my mouth, but I didn’t think it would taste all that great.
In retrospect, I don’t know what I was worried about.
The ice-cream tastes like a hot cross bun, with a strong fruity spice flavour consistent through the ice-cream. Inside are raisins and a fruity-flavoured ripple through the tub.
My hesitation came from the raisins – for some reason I never think I am going to like them in a dessert, but I always love them. And here they were an absolute highlight.
At $4.70 for an entire litre of tasty ice-cream, this was an incredible start to the year. This is branded as a limited edition tub, which is probably for the best. It’s a great novelty, but it would never be my go-to regular ice-cream of choice. That said, if Woolworths made it an annual release, I’d be very much there for it every January.
